I’ve spent a lot of time reading about other people’s lives. Whether it’s escapism or research, I can devour memoirs in a single day, and the feelings and takeaways remain with me for the rest of my life.
Some of the memoirs that I think about often:
The Latehomecomer – Kao Kalia Yang
When Breath Becomes Air – Paul Kalanithi
First They Killed My Father – Loung Ung
Finding common threads in another person’s narrative feeds the part of me that wants to feel connected to the world.
I believe that healing one’s heart is a start to healing the world. My story and my family’s story are part of the greater history of the Southeast Asian diaspora, the Secret War in Laos, and a story that needs to be shared, told, repeated, and honored. My work aims to accomplish that.
I want to tell you my story. I want to listen to yours.
